The SWE Region D Conference was held in Charleston, South Carolina, March 2-4, 2012.
Friday morning provided an opportunity to improve the attendees skills in Negotiation and Conflict Management and earn PDH/CEU’s towards their PE license requirements. The afternoon allowed for all the professional sections and collegiate sections to swap ideas and share success stories that other sections might implement to improve membership, professional development sessions, and avoid leadership burnout. The day ended with the Region D meeting, a low country boil and an evening on the town.

Saturday brought many professional development sessions to improve everything from communication to personal finance skills. The day was topped off with the annual awards dinner that included a murder mystery. Everyone enjoyed dressing up in their Roaring 20′s fashions for dinner and the after party.

The engineering societies of the Tampa Bay area put together the fourth Tampa Bay Engineers Week Banquet (TBEWB), which was held on February 24. The banquet brought together the local leaders and engineering professionals to recognize the outstanding achievements of Engineers, Science and Math Teachers, and Students in our community. As a TBEWB participating society, the Tampa Bay section of SWE was indeed proud to recognize Michelle Feduccia as the Student Engineer of the Year for her outstanding achievements and contributing her time and effort towards SWE and the engineering profession.
Student Engineer of the Year – Michelle Feduccia is currently studying Civil Engineering at the University of South Florida. She has been a member of the USF section of the Society of Women Engineers since January 2008. As a member of SWE, Michelle has always been heavily involved in outreach events. She helped during USF’s Engineering Expo, an event which is geared towards middle and high school students. In 2009 and 2010 The SWE booth won Outstanding Booth. She has also participated in the Great American Teach-In by visiting a local elementary school. Participation in these activities motivated her to run for officer. During the 2010-2011 school year, she was the section’s president. As section president, she re-established the section’s contacts with local businesses and focused on professional development of the section. In an effort to promote internships to other SWE members, she began searching for an internship herself. In March 2011, Michelle began work at Bracken Engineering as an Engineering Technician. Her dedication and attention to detail did not go unrecognized. In December 2011, Michelle was awarded Bracken Engineering’s Outstanding Technician of the Year award. Along with all these accomplishments, Michelle assists her husband in running a successful Bonsai nursery. Michelle is continuing to work towards her goals, and looks forward to a promising future.
